The Trump-Xi summit can be summed up in two words: pageantry and procrastination.

Procrastination was the other keyword, with both sides kicking the can down the road on trade, Taiwan, and other issues.
The main deliverable was a two-month extension of the Busan deal the two leaders made last year.
They also agreed to a mutual decrease in tariffs on some non-sensitive goods and the lease of two pandas to the Atlanta Zoo — hardly significant breakthroughs.
These were meager results, hardly befitting the relationship of “constructive strategic stability” that the two leaders claim to be building.
Xi’s state visit to Washington is by all definitions the most glorious diplomatic event for China this year, even more so than the Beijing summit.

China opened a new chapter of “constructive relationship of strategic stability” with Washington during the Beijing summit, and the Washington summit is the continuation of the positive trajectory.

Notably, this is the first time in history that Chinese and American top leaders conducted mutual visits in a single calendar year.
The unprecedented nature of the highest reception President Trump presented to Xi has distinguished the trip from all other senior foreign engagements Xi has ever had.
With President Trump’s help, Xi has achieved something that none of his predecessors had: genuine respect and a recognition of his peer status by a sitting U.S. president.

It’s no secret that the Trump administration has been overwhelmingly focused on the U.S. economic relationship with China.
U.S. efforts to curb China’s technological competitiveness and move toward balanced trade through tariffs, blacklists, and import bans were met with Beijing’s suspension of rare earth exports.

The follow-up announcement of $30 billion of products that will receive reduced tariff treatment may help select businesses and lobbyists, but the current U.S.-Chinese economic picture is lose-lose.
As Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted at Shangri-La, “We will build and sustain a strong denial defense in the Western Pacific that ensures aggression is infeasible, escalation unattractive, and war deemed irrational.”
